It is easy to envy the life of the celebrity since they are so beautiful, adored, and on the covers of all the magazines. Anderson Cooper is a true CNN icon who continues to dominate the world news cycle. Yet, what many individuals may not realize is he was born into one of America's richest families. The majority of his wealth came from his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, an heiress. In 1970, he made his first television appearance with his mother on The Tonight Show.
Cooper's grandparents were millionaire equestrian Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and his socialite wife, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. Then, there is his great-great-grandfather who built the family fortune through shipping and railroads. In the early eighties, many of the most fashionable flaunted Vanderbilt Jeans. His mother created their fashion design house. This might explain where he learned his fashion sense and youthful style.
Although Cooper probably rakes in the big bucks as a senior CNN anchor, his mother is estimated to be worth upwards of 200 million dollars. Certainly not pocket change! He even attended the Dalton School, an independent school in New York, though his demeanor is such that he does not exhibit any of the expected trappings of enormous and extravagant wealth.
Anderson Cooper has made a global name for himself as a highly respected anchor on CNN. This is all the more reason to praise his upbringing, as he could have easily chosen to live the life of the rich, freewheeling bachelor. Instead, Cooper decided to make his own mark in the world beyond his family's enviable and vast fortune.
